Gary Neville has claimed Mohamed Salah has ‘played’ Liverpool over the forward’s new three-year deal worth nearly £400,000 a week.

The Egyptian had entered the final 12 months of his previous terms but after months of negotiations with the club he committed his future to Anfield with a massive new contract that has seen him become the best paid player in Liverpool’s history.

There had been indications that he would run his contract down and move for free next summer but the 30-year-old eased fans’ – and Jurgen Klopp’s – worries on Friday.

However, while the Reds are celebrating their star’s new deal, former Manchester United defender Neville believes Salah is the one who has won the negotiations.

Taking to social medial, the Sky Sports pundit wrote: ‘Salah has played them hasn’t he.’

Neville had previously predicted the Golden Boot winner would leave Merseyside for one of three European sides.

‘I don’t think he will stay at Liverpool for the rest of his career,’ the player-turned-pundit said on Sky Sports’ Overlap fans’ forum back in October 2021.

‘It’s my personal view. It’s always been that view but I could be wrong.
‘The Premier League would be weaker if he left. I just think you look at someone like Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Kylian Mbappe, it’s not all about the money,’ he stated.
‘There’s a project and there’s something they have to achieve in their lives.
‘They have to play at certain clubs, they have to go and experience certain things.
‘I think Salah’s got to experience Real Madrid, the Bernabeu – Real Madrid are going to come back, by the way,’ Neville claimed.

‘I know it’s not great at the moment at Barcelona and Madrid but Salah is similar to those I’ve just mentioned, I think he has to have that on his CV at the end of his career.

‘I think he’s done an unbelievable job at Liverpool. I’ve just always felt he wants a Paris [Saint-Germain], a Real Madrid, a Barcelona and I think he’ll go and get it.
‘But I might be wrong.’
Neville was indeed proved to be wrong as Salah put pen to paper on Friday while on holiday in Mykonos.
Julian Ward, Liverpool’s Sporting Director, flew out with a delegation to Mykonos, to get the paperwork signed and the business reflects Salah’s position as one of the current best players in the world.
It had always been Salah’s preferred wish to stay on Merseyside, where he has become an icon since joining from AS Roma in 2017.
He has been one of the best buys the club has ever made and is in the all-time top 10 scorers in Liverpool’s history.
Salah has been instrumental to the Reds recent success, having scored 156 goals in 254 appearances, as well as helping guide the team to last season’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup triumphs.
The Egyptian was even named both the FWA Footballer of the Year and the PFA Players’ Player of the Year last season.
Salah was delighted to get his new deal agreed and told the club website: ‘I feel great and [I am] excited to win trophies with the club. It’s a happy day for everyone.

‘It takes a little bit of time, I think, to renew, but now everything is done so we just need to focus on what’s next.

‘I think you can see in the last five or six years the team was always going [upwards]. Last season we were close to winning four, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two trophies.

‘I think we are in a good position to fight for everything. We have new signings as well.

‘We just need to keep working hard, have a good vision, be positive and go for everything again.’
